Many of us have heard about the 3/1 or the 5/1 rule… something along those lines. That rule applies pretty well to any social marketing endeavors. In fact, I think the more quality you present to the social platform that you are approaching, the better. If anything, I’d say to shoot for a 10/1 rule. That is 10 quality contributions for every 1 sales pitch. People don’t really like being sold to.. and they are going to avoid you like the plague if all you do is promote, promote, promote.
When it comes to twitter, it can be tough to figure out what to tweet that your followers would like. That’s why I’ve put together a list of 10 things that tweeters love:
- Google Hot Trends - Not only will twitter followers notice, google will, too.
- Twitter Trending Topics – You can find out what’s HOT on twitter in your twitter.com sidebar. Use one of the keywords or hashtags and all eyes will be on your tweet.
- Breaking News
- Inspirational Quotes
- Your Yummy Dinner - For some reason, the world is full of foodies. If you had something absolutely extraordinary for dinner, especially if you made it yourself, by all means tweet about it.
- Useful Tools - People love cool new gadgets and tools, especially if it makes life easier (and it’s free.)
- Free Stuff - Who doesn’t love free stuff?
- A Question - Don’t forget that twitter is a social site. Be humble for a bit and ask your followers a question. Perhaps you would like a recommendation or help with something technical. Let’s hope you have some real people on the other end that would be more than willing to help.
- Retweets – Last but certainly not least, if you are really out of ideas for a tweet (or you are just pressed for time), retweet something that you found interesting or of value.
